Vivid Sydney 2024 Insider Guide

By Elle · May 2024 · 8 min read

Experience Oz is thrilled to be partnering with Vivid Sydney for our second year! It’s evolved so much over the years and now goes beyond just ‘lighting up the city’. This year, the iconic festival is centred around the theme of humanity, which you can experience through light, food, music, and ideas.

Prepare to be dazzled as Vivid Sydney transforms the harbour city into a hub of colour and creativity from May 24 to June 15, 2024. With visitors from far and wide expected to flock to this luminous spectacle, Vivid Sydney isn't just an event – it's an immersive celebration of artistry and imagination.

We’re excited to offer our insider's guide on this year's festival, which promises to make Sydney shine brighter like never before. With a nice mix of free and paid things to do this winter, making something for everyone.

These are the four captivating realms of Vivid Sydney:

Vivid Sydney Lights (Walking Guide)

Embark on the journey along the Vivid Sydney Light Walk, stretching over 8kms from the iconic Sydney Opera House to Central Station. Lights flick on at 6pm each night. As Vivid Sydney’s Light Walk spans along the entire city, we would suggest you explore across a night or two.

You could begin beside Circular Quay station and start at one of our personal faves, Customs House, which this year features the incredible art of Reg Mombassa. It features an unconventional Aussie road trip through the surreal world of bacterial monsters alongside retro-futuristic robots and other strange creatures, immersing audiences in a playful journey challenging collective identity and humanity's essence.

As you take in the iconic Lighting of the Sails projection on the Sydney Opera House, be sure to also check out the Harbour Bridge Pylons. They will transform from grey to a vibrant display of life as Indigenous artist Tori-Jay portrays the Torres Strait 8's battle against climate change, embodying their struggle through characters and totems, symbolising the urgent need to safeguard our environment and collective home, resonating across the literal and symbolic bridge that unites us.

For as little as $22, you can experience viewing these two projections away from the crowds and on the water on one of our many sightseeing cruise options. You can enjoy a hot choc or glass of wine as you kick back and enjoy the art across the city.

Vivid Music

Let the rhythm of Vivid Sydney enchant you as local and international talents grace stages across Sydney.

For 12 nights, Tumbalong Park is a hub of free live music with artists from local and international contemporary artists. From the pulsating Sounds of Afrobeats at Tumbalong Nights to the soul-stirring performances at Vivid LIVE, music lovers are in for a treat. Keep an eye out for standout acts like Budjerah + Jem Cassar-Daley and the mesmerizing sounds of Deerhoof and Fever Ray.

And each Saturday, there’s a kids act for the little ones. Tumbalong Park is also filled with light fixtures, making it the perfect place to explore for the evening as a family.

Our team is excited about heading along to check out No Fixed Address at Machine Hall, a First Nations rock-reggae band that is synonymous with resilience and community spirit. Can’t wait for that one!

Vivid Ideas

Engage in thought-provoking discussions and immersive experiences that delve into the essence of humanity. How about celebrating identity and inclusivity with "Say My Name"? on June 5 at UTS, a free event for all. Jan Fran moderates a discussion on navigating the challenges of name pronunciation and recognition in Australia, featuring personal anecdotes and insights from Dr Elaine Laforteza, Sunil Badami, Dr Sanet Du Toit, and Dr Mariko Smith. Names are such an important part of identity, this discussion is sure to inspire us to embrace the richness of diversity and work towards a more respectful society together.

Delve into the complexities of art, culture, and technology with events like "REMIX Summit Sydney and Champions of Change Workshop. Explore the depths of human existence through captivating installations, theatre performances, and current affairs discussions.

Vivid Food

Satisfy your culinary cravings with a gastronomic journey through Vivid Food. From the innovative creations of renowned chefs to Vivid-inspired menus at restaurants across Sydney, there's something to tantalize every palate. Indulge in unique dining experiences, like Danielle Alvarez's "A Culinary Canvas" series, or embark on the Vivid Place Food Trail which is open late for you to sample delights from a range of different chefs and restaurateurs. We’ve got our eyes on a Mi Goreng toastie!

And it’s back this year, Vivid Fire Kitchen is held a new location at The Goods Line, Ultimo. Drop by this food hub to enjoy the universal language BBQ and experience the best NSW product and Sydney’s vibrant food scene. With local and international chefs, you can wander around the street to enjoy fire-cooked dishes from around the world. And you'll catch us snacking up at the Messina Milk Bar!
